A Polish Cyclist called Adusia was killed here. Do Zobaczenia Adusia!!!
Adrianna Skrzypiec died after a hit and run collision with a lorry. The driver did not stop after running over her at the roundabout on Woolwich Road under the flyover for the A102. Adrianna was pronounced dead at the scene.

Known as Adusia to her friends, she was engaged to marry her boyfriend, Tomek Koziolek, and the two had recently made plans to travel to Brazil on holiday. Tomek was not allowed to identify Adusia’s body because of the severe nature of her fatal injuries, according to friend Weronika Olszewska quoted in the London Evening Standard.

Her friends placed this poster by her ghost bike, appealing for witnesses to come forward. Anyone with information should contact Collision Investigation Unit at Catford Traffic Garage on 020 8285 157

At a round table discussion with Canon’s Roger Machin today (more in-depth detail here); met the new Canon clan – 1D Mark IV and new lenses (that 100m macro is something else – fast zoom, light and crisp).

Then there’s the EOS 7D, which I have my pecuniarily-challenged eye on.

There is also a piece on how Canon is pushing the 7D megapixel boundaries here

Here’s the EOS-1D Mark IV press release

Canon SA has announced the EOS-1D Mark IV – a high-speed, professional Digital SLR (DSLR) camera designed to empower photographers to capture split-second moments in high resolution, under the most challenging of conditions.

•Also available – new EOS-1D Mark IV Wireless Transmitter WFT-E2 II (also compatible with existing Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E2)

Comments Roger Machin, photo/video product manager at Canon Consumer Imaging SA: “The EOS-1D Mark IV has been developed with the specific needs of photographers in mind. We’ve taken the feedback of photographers to heart and as a result produced a Digital SLR tailored to their exact requirements. The EOS-1D Mark IV is packed with advanced features that enable photographers to take high-quality images quickly and accurately.”

Highly sensitive, cross-type focusing – capture every detail at speed

The Canon EOS-1D Mark IV’s new 45-point AF system, with 39 f/2.8 sensitive cross-type points located across the frame, provides consistent AF on static or moving subjects, no matter which AF point is being used. All 45 AF points are user selectable and now more sensitive, with the AF points towards the edge of the frame offering identical levels of performance to those in the centre.

The entire AF system is managed by a dedicated microprocessor, providing fast, accurate focusing – even when shooting continuously at 10fps. Canon’s newly-evolved AI Servo II AF offers more precision when tracking moving objects, utilising the power provided by the dedicated microprocessor to improve overall tracking accuracy and increasing focus reliability in low-contrast and extremely bright conditions.

Additionally, to provide increased flexibility, a vast range of manual and automatic AF control options are available including – with lenses featuring an AF Stop button – Canon’s new Spot AF feature. Spot AF offers a more precise focus area to meet the needs of photographers that require pinpoint focusing. A 63-zone metering system enables the use of multiple metering modes, with the dedicated sensor linked to the 45 AF points, providing AF point-linked and multiple spot metering options.

The EOS-1D Mark IV also features orientation-linked AF points, an orientation sensor controlled feature that enables photographers to store separate AF points for different camera positions. Covering both horizontal and vertical shooting positions (both grip up and grip down), orientation linked AF points offers the flexibility to quickly change camera orientation when shooting with the AF settings switching to suit the subject. AF point registration enables the photographer to store an alternate AF point that can be used at the touch of a button.

The power and performance of Dual “DIGIC 4” and CMOS

The combination of a custom-designed, high resolution 16.1MP APS-H CMOS sensor and Dual “DIGIC 4” processors ensures that detailed, crisp images are delivered at high speeds.

The inclusion of an APS-H sensor combines a high pixel-count with an effective field of view measuring 1.3x the focal length of the lens. This provides immediate benefits for sports, news and wildlife photojournalists, who operate on-the-move and need to get closer to their subjects and maintain fast apertures without resorting to longer focal-length lenses – which are typically heavier.

Continuous shooting is facilitated by the sensor’s eight-channel data read out, which provides a rapid read sequence and makes full use of the Dual “DIGIC 4” processors to enable high-speed 10fps shooting at full 16.1MP resolution, while maintaining image colours through 14-bit analogue to digital (A/D) conversion.

The ability to shoot images at 10fps, without any drop in resolution, means the EOS-1D Mark IV features the fastest continuous shooting with Auto Focus currently available from a Canon DSLR. The increased processing capacity of Dual “DIGIC 4”processors manages the increased data created by the 60% rise in image resolution, while still enabling the EOS-1D Mark IV to deliver a continuous burst of up to 121 large JPEGS, or 28 RAW images using a UDMA 6 card – ideal for fast-moving sporting action or news events where scenes are unfolding quickly.

The EOS-1D Mark IV also includes updated Picture Styles and the first ever integration of ALO (Auto Lighting Optimizer) in a professional EOS body, automatically correcting the contrast and brightness of images as they are recorded.

These features combine to provide a faster workflow for those requiring press-ready images direct from the camera without the need for retouching, enabling photographers to concentrate solely on capturing that once-in-a-lifetime shot.

Full compatibility with the latest UDMA 6 standard Flash memory cards also ensures that image data is rapidly written to the EOS-1D Mark IV’s CF memory card. In addition, the flexibility to also record to a Secure Digital/SDHC memory card allows photographers to keep shooting for longer until they get the shot they need.

Advanced performance in low-light

The EOS-1D Mark IV also delivers extreme low-light performance. Standard ISO on the EOS-1D Mark IV ranges from 100-12,800, while extended ISO ranges from a low of 50 to 102,400 – the highest ISO ever offered by a Canon SLR. This extreme low-light performance makes the EOS-1D Mark IV ideal for night shots or shooting at evening events, where the lack of light would normally make shooting impossible.

Intelligent noise reduction techniques keep chroma and luminance noise to a minimum, while maintaining colour balance, but never take control of the overall image quality away from the photographer. The architecture of the new 16.1MP APS-H CMOS sensor, featuring gapless microlenses with less surrounding circuitry and more sensitive, high-capacity photodiodes, also ensures that all available light is used as efficiently as possible to maximise ISO performance in low light conditions.

Built for extreme use – robust, weatherproof and portable

Light for its category, the EOS-1D Mark IV features a full magnesium alloy body, providing protection against knocks and bumps. The EOS-1D Mark IV has also been the subject of some subtle ergonomic redesigns, with the buttons reshaped and given a more defined ‘click’ when pressed, to make life easier for photographers operating in more extreme weather conditions where gloves may be necessary

The EOS-1D Mark IV is protected by a total of 76 rubber seals fitted around the controls and cover seams, making the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV dust and water resistant when used in tandem with Canon’s range of weather-resistant EF lenses and Speedlite EX flash units.

The 920,000 dot, VGA resolution, Clear View II LCD makes it easy to instantly review images and video in the most challenging conditions. By filling the gap between the LCD panel and the protective cover screen with a photo-elastic material, Canon has been able to reduce light reflection, resulting in the clear display of images. The previously acrylic cover has also been replaced by reinforced glass, providing strong, scratch-resistant protection for the screen.

Also, the EOS-1D Mark IV features the EOS integrated cleaning system, which automatically eliminates dust on the sensor – ensuring reliable image quality when shooting in testing outdoor environments.

Cinematic, High Definition video

In addition to providing high-quality still image performance, the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV features EOS Movie function, providing the ability to capture 1080p High Definition (HD) video at 30, 25 and 24fps and 720p footage at 60 and 50fps. As well as complete compatibility with PAL, NTSC and native 1080/24p cinematic frame rates, the EOS-1D Mark IV offers full manual exposure, providing film makers and photographers with control over depth of field.

The EOS-1D Mark IV features a programmable button to enable quick movie shooting, allowing photographers to record HD video instantly at the touch of a single button. The EOS-1D Mark IV also features a mini HDMI output, enabling video and images to be viewed directly on compatible HD-ready TVs.

Advanced customisation

Canon’s EOS-1D Mark IV is highly customisable, allowing photographers to take complete control of the camera’s features. Auto Exposure (AE) and Flash Exposure (FE) micro-adjustments allow photographers to fine tune the exposure for any given purpose, enabling them to perfectly match two separate cameras for consistent results or simply adjust the settings to meet specific personal requirements and tastes.

Preferred user profiles can also be stored to memory card and subsequently transferred to other EOS-1D Mark IV bodies, so that photographers can seamlessly transfer their profile to another body if required.

Further customisable features include the ability to add copyright information directly in the camera. This enables photographers to embed their details within each shot as standard, removing the need for retrospective data insertion, and allowing news photographers to get shots to picture desks in the shortest time possible.

An integrated microphone also allows the recording of audio notes to accompany each image, which will directly benefit photographers who wish to keep a record of the content of each image as they shoot.

The EOS-1D Mark IV is compatible with all existing EOS-1D Mark III accessories, EF lenses (excluding EF-S lenses) and EX Series Speedlite flash units. Untethered shooting and image transfer are available with the optional Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E2 II. New EOS-1D Mark IV accessories will also be backwards compatible with EOS-1D Mark III bodies, subject to a firmware upgrade

The Volkswagen Type 14 was a 2+2 marketed from 1955 to 1974 by Volkswagen in coupe and convertible bodystyles — combining the chassis and mechanicals of the Type 1, evocative styling by the Italian carrozzeria Ghia, and hand-built bodywork by German coach-builder Karmann.

The combination proved instantly successful for VW; production doubled soon after its introduction, and the Type 14 became the most imported car in the U.S. American industrial designer Walter Dorwin Teague selected the Type 14 for his list of the world’s most beautifully designed products.

Volkswagen introduced a later variant in 1961, the Type 34 — featuring a less curvacious bodywork and based on the newly introduced Type 3 platform.

Over 445,000 Karmann Ghias were produced in Germany over the car’s production life — not including the Type 34 variant. Karmann Brazil produced 41,600 cars locally for South America between 1962 and 1975.

(Wikipedia)

- – -

This 2001 Opel Combo C (european version) is one of those mid-range quality models, made by MiniChamps. There lot of diecast feed points and paint bubbles visible. Not even the stickers at the license plate holders were mounted correctly. The (badly displayable) interior is mid-quality detailed, showing a safety grid between drivers area and goods space.

keys to your kingdom

car keys.

the ultimate expression of personal freedom in America, the symbol of mobility, ability; an extension of the individual. with a car many things are possible – travel, shopping, hauling, visiting or just plain driving for the pleasure of it. we take cars for granted – if you don’t have one you are somehow deficient – and we’ve largely forgotten how powerful they are.

my wife has a car, a modest vehicle that gets her where she needs to go – work, school, errands, visits with friends and family. it’s utility is undeniable. there is a faux-sportiness about it, and the color – blackberry – is quite pleasing to the eye. i know that car backwards and forwards with only one minor detail – i haven’t a clue what it is like to drive it.

i have what is termed these days a "seizure disorder", known more widely as "epilepsy", once known as "having fits". my brain does not function correctly, prone to electro-chemical misfiring that renders it chaotic, unusable, dysfunctional. during these neurological meltdowns i may fall to the ground and shake violently, sit in a chair and stare off into space, drooling, or wander panicked around the house sniffing the air for a scent that exists only in my inside-out mind.

the aftermath of these seizures covers a range. at the minimum i am exhausted and confused when i come to or am forced to wake up. my muscles will be sore, my head in the thrall of a serious pounder, speech heavily slurred, thought largely impossible. if i’m really lucky i’ll still have the smell of burning wire or insulation in my nose, and the taste of hot metal in my mouth, both by-products of the seizures involving that nonexistent odor. a long period of sleep is required for me to function at even the most rudimentary level.

the permanent effects become more pronounced as the seizures continue. my short term memory is a mess, i’m very forgetful, and while speaking or writing i’ll lose words, and i mean lose them so completely i’ll have to find another way to speak/write my thought. i’m prone to sudden exhaustion, sleep poorly, and my temper has become short, too short, which is hard on rachel. coupled with my instant forgetfulness, i’ve started quite a few needless arguments based on the fruits of a faulty memory.

my first seizure occurred when i was 20 years old – not exactly rare, but not that common. as far as i know it was not the direct result of a brain injury, though my left frontal lobe does show two very small areas of scarring. it is not known whether or not this has any relation to the seizures, though the only one caught during eeg monitoring originated from that same lobe. i have been medicated on and off for the last twenty years with no real success. presently, i am at the end of the medication road, taking my current prescription as much to satisfy my neurologist (an excellent doctor – high praise from someone like me) as to control seizures. my longest period without seizures was eighteen months, during which time i was not taking any meds at all. the pace, variety, and severity of the seizures has increased over the years.

the treatments left to me are all invasive, requiring surgical testing to determine my fitness for the procedures themselves. "it’s only brain surgery" my doctor cracks in his deadpan way. for the time being i’m unprepared to risk the possible loss of function, which varies wildly depending upon which parts of the brain must be removed. perhaps walking won’t be possible, or speech, there may be memory loss, and so forth.

so for the indeterminate future i have to find a way to get along with a brain and body prepared to betray me without a seconds warning. i cannot leave the house by myself. fear of having seizures in public or finding myself appearing stupid because my memory has chosen an inopportune moment to abandon me keeps me at home. so does the sheer danger of walking around by myself and the potentially fatal possibilities of having a seizure while crossing the road or using the stairs, or any of a dozen other scenarios. rachel works and goes to school, so i’m pretty much on my own, essentially house bound.

the immobility may be somewhat alleviated in months to come. i am applying to an organization called Paws With A Cause, a non profit that raises and trains working dogs to aid the disabled and chronically ill. for epileptics there are seizure response dogs which can be trained to respond in a variety of ways depending upon the nature of the seizures the person experiences. this can include staying with me, trying to awaken me, bringing the phone so i can call for help, and monitoring me as i move about the house, or go outside. in the outside world the dog can help me get around, blocking me before i walk into objects, go down stairs, cross the street. once given a command (something i would not be able to do during a seizure) the dog would allow me to proceed. it would also be able to alert strangers to my status, and carry a cell phone pre-programmed with my wife’s phone number as well as my meds.

the application process has only begun, and i don’t know if i will be approved nor how long it will all take, but this could be my set of keys to the kingdom.

of course, even with the dog at my side, i still won’t be able to drive.

See also Choichun Leung talks about her mixed media paintings (Flickr 720p HD video).

Choichun Leung left Wales when she was seventeen to pursue a degree in metal-smithing at Loughborough college of Art and Design in the UK, afterwhich she studied Buddhist iconography in both Beijing and the Yangkung caves in China’s Shanxi province. In 1988 she moved to London where she studied under the Ray Man Chinese Orchestra as a percussionist and a student of the Gu-qin – a traditional Chinese bass zither. Leung worked in Hong Kong as a background artist for animation film before returning to London in 1992 where she received a grant and Gold Award from the Prince of Wales’ Youth Business Trust for the most innovative new business of the year: a line of symbolic art products using the traditional technique of Chinese paper cutting.

With music and the arts always hand in hand, Leung came to New York in 1994 where she began painting seriously, worked as an assistant to artist Peter Max, and studied music composition. From that point forward, Choichun’s artwork has been inextricably entwined with her interest in music and have continued to influence each other.

As the single mother of a young daughter, Choichun moved to Germany in 2002 to write music, perform and collaborate on an audio/visual project based in Koln. Upon the invitation of a gallery in 2006 she returned to New York. Most recently Choichun has been featured in two solo exhibitions at JLA Baxter House in Manhattan and will take part in a group showing in Hamburg in November 2008. Choichun currently lives in Brooklyn, NYC .

Artist Statement Our lives are as long as we remember. Our memories are imbedded in us like DNA. But what of lives that through trauma or age have lost memory? What of the interplay of conscious thought and the sub-conscious? Which one really drives the show? My paintings are like rorschach tests in reverse, a psychological diary of that moment in time, an investigation of the relationship between past and present, reality and illusion and in effect a blue print to the past self. Through the symbolisms revealed, and the stories or objects we project into the abstract, we expose another layer of ourselves and in turn provide clues to what may not be fully aware. My paintings are simple traces of that activity, void of any meaning, but imbedded with the years of experience that shapes us, yet also holds us hostage.

Choichun never paints from sketches but instead allows the process and medium dictate. Each application is an expressive gesture evoking the emotion and inner psychology of that moment, a conflicted excavation of what may be hidden or imagined. The script like lines emerge as a non-cognitive language or what she has come to identify as ‘glyphs’ – a pictographic personal alphabet; where ‘glyphs’ document the days, weeks and months spent on a piece. The one actual reference that Choichun can identify in her work after the fact springs from her background in music and her fascination with its chaotic notes and interpretive patterns. These can be seen in the work’s fine, rhythmic and frenetic lines as well as in the heavier, poured-on, black & white ‘mono-glyphs’ which overtake the paintings like visual representations of a sound. Choichun paints on both wood panels and canvas, using liquid acrylic, aerosol, oil bars and thread . With sticks, brushes, trowels and vessels: applying the paint and then scratching through the layers to reveal what is underneath, scripting with ‘glyphs’ throughout, painting over, sanding down and repeating this process until an image is revealed or another is hidden.

Cool interactive ball towers feature many kinetic elements, including lighted pushbuttons, plasma spheres, balls carried on a conveyor to roll down a spiral track, making faces nod, a pinwheel spin, and rolling in a polished bowl. A moving shoe mobile has gears that rotate, and fanciful shoe sculptures, like the "shoe tree" and "shoe horn", that move around a rectangular track. Wall-mounted games complete the exciting shoe shopping experience for children. These elements were installed in 20 retail stores nationwide. Interior designed by Elkus/Manfredi Architects. The video of this retail store environment on YouTube proves that motion does attract people! A little Island music for your enjoyment (I love this song!)

Shabba Ranks & Krystal – Twice My Age

Having been to the Cayman Islands many times, this is my absolute favourite spot. Much nicer (in my humble opinion) then Seven Mile Beach.

It is a little off the beaten path and you would be best to rent a car/scooter but it is definately worth the drive.

For those who are interested in reading more

If you`re looking to escape somewhere off the beaten track then look no further than Rum Point; Grand Cayman`s very own slice of paradise. Located on the North side of the island its natural beauty, white sandy beaches and azure waters are a popular hang-out for locals looking to unwind. For travellers it`s a relatively untouched delight that always offers a hammock to relax in, great food, a welcoming atmosphere and, for the more active, a wide choice of water sports.

This beautiful public beach is a 40 minute car drive from George Town or you can take a bus from the nearest bus-stop located in North Side. Although many visitors opt to take a private boat across to Rum Point so they can marvel at the sights of the approaching coastline. Once at the beach there are plenty of free benches, hammocks and sun loungers to commandeer for a day of ultimate relaxation. For those that prefer a quiet spot out of the sun`s glare there are shaded areas under the island`s swaying Casuarina trees. Toilets are also provided free of charge so there are plenty of amenities for all the family.

Once you`ve had your fill of the sun, take a dip in the warm, shallow sea where you can walk out quite a way before it gets too deep. The clear waters make it an ideal snorkelling and diving spot for lovers of marine life. For other activities Red Sail Sports run a Water Sports Centre at Rum Point that caters for all the excitement you could need. You can hire Jet Skis, paddle boats, wave runners and take water skiing lessons. There is also a glass bottom boat that takes regular excursions out to spot the huge sting rays living nearby.

Legend has it that Rum Point earned its name from the barrels of rum that would wash up on the shore when rum smuggling schooners ran into trouble at sea. Nowadays the rum still flows freely in the fabulous eateries such as the Wreck Bar. The reasonably priced menu offers a range of lunch dishes, such as the Blackened Mahi Mahi and is renowned for its Frozen Mudslide cocktails. If you fancy a more sophisticated lunch, the Rum Point Club offers a classy dining experience in Grand Cayman`s only show kitchen while looking out over views of the ocean. The restaurant is decorated with local art and has a mouth watering selection of sea food caught by local fisherman daily.

1965 Lewis’s Department Store Bristol
image above Real photograph of Lewis Department Store Bristol in 1965.

1955 Bristol had watched the two giants take shape alongside each other on the Horsefair BS1 . . . the two swish department stores that would put Bristol back on the map as the region’s top shopping centre. There was the "ocean liner-shaped" Lewis’s complete with its exciting plans for a roof garden overlooking central Bristol and its huge neighbour Jones.

Lewis’s was later taken over by John Lewis (no relation)

We look back at Broadmead’s top store of the 1960s

Never mind the confusion in 1980 when the John Lewis Partnership moved in (and then on to Cribbs Causeway), to most Bristolians it’s always been Lewis’s – Broadmead’s shopping mecca.

After the store had opened its doors in 1957, the Portland stone building with the appearance of an ocean liner became the reason for visiting Broadmead.

Despite the company’s northern roots it was felt that a big store like Lewis’s would bring a touch of sophistication to the bomb- damaged city.

Just like television’s Grace Brothers, it sold virtually everything you could want – from washing machines to Wilton carpets, wool to wine gums.

Advertisements claimed the store would “challenge comparison with any in the world”.

And to add to the excitement, Lewis’s departments offered a brand new shopping experience – self-selection.

Eight storeys high and air conditioned, Lewis’s had taken three years to build and one year to fit out.

Situated in a commanding position – the gateway to Broadmead – the building had cost a cool £3 million, a lot of money in those days.

Before it opened, 3,000 people applied for the 800 jobs on offer.

On the first day an estimated 100,000 people swarmed through the store’s 200 departments.

Many had queued all night.

Just to add to the fun, Lewis’s had nine lifts (with attendants) and 10 escalators.

And on the sixth floor, customers would find a roof garden with fountains and a restaurant where you could relax and look out over the city.

After Lewis’s arrived, Bristolians started flocking into town in droves.

It was the place to shop.

But many older residents – those who had shopped in Castle Street/Wine Street before the war – were wary of this brash northern newcomer.

Others feared that, with Jones’s department store (it’s now Debenhams) already operating nearby, the city might become “over-shopped”.

And because it had been built over a plague burial pit (in fact, part of St James’s cemetery), the store was rumoured to be haunted.

But, once established, Lewis’s turned into an unqualified success.

Who could resist the wonderful food department on the ground floor, which sold such unheard of exotica as pumpernickel and, wait for it, poppadoms?

On the same floor you could buy photo equipment, jewellery, gloves, haberdashery, stockings, tobaccos and perfumery.

The basement, which contained the household department, was a handyman’s DIY haven.

The upper floors provided a wonderful array of luxury goods – a huge stock of furniture, carpets, television and radio sets.

People said it was like being in paradise.

Boasting the largest fashion display in the city, Lewis’s had more than 50 fitting rooms.

And in the children’s department, the baby section featured pink hide chairs arranged beside the counters so customers could sit in comfort.

There was also a bank (with a special low counter for children), a library, a guinea hat bar and a men’s hairdressing shop, where a short back and sides would cost you two shillings and sixpence (25p).

Lewis’s also became the place to dine, with the Pageant restaurant and cafe on the fourth floor always busy.

But the piéce de rèsistance was the roof garden restaurant with its snug red chairs, fountain, pool, rose beds and climbers tumbling over timber trellises.

Protective glass walls surrounded the garden which commanded views of the entire city to the Dundry hills and beyond.

Plaques on the handrails indicated particular points of interest.

As Lewis’s intended, it was the perfect spot for weary shoppers to enjoy a relaxing tea or coffee amid the green leaves, flowers and soft summer breezes.

Lewis’s demanded high standards from its employees, but nobody was complaining – pay and conditions were better than in most other stores.

Junior staff were issued with meal tickets which entitled them to a full lunch for just sixpence, and afternoon tea for just threepence.

Throughout the Sixties business boomed for Lewis’s.

Customers loved the gimmicks – the “smasher day sales”, fashion shows, competitions and especially the live models who would lie on a large bed in the windows.

But times were a-changing.

As car ownership became the norm so competition sprang up in the shape of superstores and out-of-town shopping.

By the 1970s, Lewis’s overheads were spiralling. Staff levels were cut to 400, plus 100 part-timers, and many departments, including the roof garden, were closed.

In 1980, Lewis’s sold out to the John Lewis Partnership (a totally different company with a different name) in a £7 million deal.

It was a sad day and, as they say, the end of an era.

Since then the flagship building has been home to Bentalls and House of Fraser.

Budget clothing store Primark will be moving in shortly.

Do you have any memories of Lewis Department Store?
